Big Announcement
September 30th was my last day at Data & Society Research Institute. I love Data & Society. I have a deep admiration for its work, and I feel privileged to have contributed to its growth over the last eight years. I had the chance to lead the Disinformation Action Lab and create/run the Public Tech Leadership Collaborative, a 500+ member peer-learning network of policymakers, scholars, and practitioners, working to ensure data and technology serve the public interest. And I had the profound opportunity to work with/learn from smart, creative, thoughtful colleagues every single day.
Writing Untangled and teaching my courses have become my passion. They bring me true joy, and I want to feel that feeling for as long as I can. So I’m taking a leap, following a dream, and I hope you’ll come along for the ride
So what does this mean for Untangled?
First, I’m doubling down on my course Systems Change for Tech & Society Leaders. Participants … love it. 9/10 average score, positive testimonials, and I was recently invited to teach it at Harvard University for a group of 60 digital transformation leaders. Cohorts 4 & 5 are open, and enrollment is limited.
I’m also excited to partner with organizations to design tailored courses and trainings at the intersection of emerging technologies and systems change. Ping me if that’s of interest.
Second, starting in January, I’ll be running monthly live trainings on the foundational modules of my course — and the core of my own thinking. Before you can change your system, you have to see it clearly: the mindsets and frames, power dynamics, information flows, feedback loops, technologies, and relationships that drive its behavior — and the blind spots that keep you and your system stuck. Each 2-hour interactive session will give you practical tools to map these dynamics and uncover leverage points for change, and a Playbook to put them immediately into practice.
For annual paid subscribers: One training per year will be included in your subscription ($250 value).
For free subscribers: If you join a training, you can apply the cost toward the full course.
Third, I’m launching an advisory practice to help organizations cut through the AI noise, make sense of complexity, and drive real system change. My offerings include organizational & systems strategy, group facilitation, and executive coaching. So if you’re:
A mission-driven organization working to align emerging technologies with your vision of the future,
A company seeking to anticipate the social & ethical implications of AI, or
A philanthropy aiming to catalyze real systems change,
…I’d love to talk. I’m currently building a short roster of clients.
So, for those keeping track, for $9/month or $90/year, paid subscribers will now get access to:
Every issue of Untangled (e.g. deep-dives, practical guides, special issues, etc.)
One live, interactive training per year for annual subscribers ($250 value)
Plus, I’ll mail you a hard copy of one of my two books - AI Untangled or Crypto Untangled.
Free subscribers will continue to get the occasional public post. If you ever want to read a paywalled article and can’t afford to subscribe, however, just email me and I’ll send it along, no questions asked
How else can I support you?
Subscriptions, courses, advisory services, and trainings aren’t for everyone. If you value what I do here and would like to support it another way, please:
Forward this newsletter to your friends and colleagues: Untangled is read by nearly 10,000 people across 50 states and 147 countries. That. Is. Bonkers. But it happened because people like you shared it with your network. Forwarding this message to your network and encouraging them to subscribe would mean the world to me.
Follow me on LInkedIn & engage with my posts, like this one. Help me win the algorithm?
How are you feeling, really?
You know how anxiety and excitement feel the same way in your body? That’s how I’m feeling! This isn’t a small change for me — it’s a big one! But I’m comforted knowing that there are real people on the other end of these emails who enjoy reading them each week.
I don’t know nearly as many of you as I’d like — so my last ask is to take two minutes to reply to this note, introduce yourself, and if you feel so inspired, tell me where you’d like to see Untangled go from here. Or just wish me luck! It’s going to be an adventure, and I’ll take all the support I can get.
More soon,
Charley

Fantastic that you are taking this step!
One thing that I am struggling with being a better advocate for ethical decision making by building a community rather than alienating people. When you know what AI companies are doing, it's hard not to become a debbie downer. People perceive you as an anti-AI advocate or might feel ashamed or attacked because they rely on genAI. I'd love to find the language and ways to hold better conversations about responsible tech that do not lead to further polarisation. Perhaps there's space in the future of Untangled for this?
